Abstract

Shipment volume of the Taiwanese feature phone industry declined in the fourth quarter of 2009. Motorola, the largest client of Taiwanese ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) companies, did not roll out new models in the fourth quarter, while some older products reached the end of their lifecycle and were no longer shipped. On top of that, shipment of models that were still being shipped declined. This was the main reason for the Taiwanese industry's shipment decline in the fourth quarter of 2009. Meanwhile, production orders of Nokia and Sony Ericsson maintained roughly the same level as in the third quarter and did not grow significantly. As for orders from LG, even though one model achieved strong shipments, the company's order volume could not push the overall shipment volume of the Taiwanese feature phone industry. As a result, shipment volume of the Taiwanese feature phone industry in the fourth quarter of 2009 is estimated at 7.42 million units, down 18.9% compared to the third quarter. As the shipment prices of some LG models declined, ASP (Average Selling Price) of the overall Taiwanese industry fell to US$46.6 in the fourth quarter of 2009.
